ROSS McKISSOCK'S tips for Robert Knox on Retiring from the Accounting Industry
- Do not hurry (no billable time).
- Always start late and finish early.
- Don't not use technical 'IT' words or tax abbreviations as most people will not understand you.
- Do not worry about exact numbers, use a broad-brush approach.
- If people want advice tell them you cannot remember (write a note to yourself not to remember certain things).
- If people ask what are you going to do when you retire, tell them - get a life!
- Start travelling while your suitcase is larger than your pill case.
- Only read the sports pages, travel and cartoons in the papers, do not bother with the financial pages.
- Do not give your wife advice on how to do something around the house or you will end up with that job for the rest of your life.
- Above all be happy!!

RETIREMENT AND SUCCESSION PLANNING
Information from Rod Cunich, Access Business Lawyers. 1300 850 280
Estate planning is a three part process involving;
1. Identification of your personal assets and those in your broader estate such as assets owned jointly, by trusts or companies.
2. Identification of the various risks you wish to take into account, e.g. your early death or the divorce of a beneficiary.
3. The design and implementation of a plan which incorporates all your assets and takes into account risk minimisation, tax minimisation and succession issues.
Each step involves a multi-disciplinary exercise requiring the co-ordinated involvement of your financial planning, accounting and legal advisers.
A balanced plan is not limited to the preparation of a Will. It involves much more. A well thought out plan may well include:
1. A Will
2. An enduring Power of Attorney
3. Appointment of a Power of Guardianship
4. Integration of company, trust and superannuation structures
5. Realisation of your investment in an owner managed business or jointly owned business
6. A tax efficient structure addressing income tax, CGT, GST and stamp duty implications of transferring assets and/or managing assets upon death or other event.
7. The consideration of a range of critical events - not just death. There are many events that you may wish to consider and plan around, including;
. mental incapacity - either of you or a beneficiary's,
. physical incapacity- either of you or a beneficiary's,
. bankruptcy or business failure - either of you or a beneficiary's,
. divorce - either of you or a beneficiary's,
. retirement, or
. a dispute between beneficiaries over the Will.
8. The use of a testamentary trust within a Will, for example can enable maximum flexibility so that a beneficiary may enjoy the full benefit of an estate whilst offering protection against losing the property due to bankruptcy or dispute.
9. The use and integration of insurance as an asset in your plan, whether as part of a business succession scheme to cover debt or income, or simply to bolster the wealth of a future estate.
Ideally all succession plans incorporate a retirement plan and include investment and wealth accumulation strategies. For more information on Estate and Succession Planning, call Rod on 1300 850 280 or email Rod Cunich
ANNOUNCEMENT - Retirement of Robert Knox FCA February 2007
Robert Knox FCA, has been a dedicated and vital partner and employee of FWA Eagar&Co, Chartered Accountants in Manly, for over 40 years, and this year he has announced his decision to retire. FWA Eagar&Co have been operating in Chancery Arcade on Belgrave Street since the early 1920s when Frank William Austin Eagar started the practice.
Robert began his career in 1961 at Starkey & Starkey, now known as Ernst & Young. He moved on to work for FWA Eagar&Co as a junior in 1966 and in 1971, Robert was made a Partner at Eagar&Co with his father Walter Knox, Eric Atkinson, Neville Higham and Ross McKissock. Robert remained as partner until 2004 when the firm was sold to Phillip Browne. Robert was admitted into the Institute of Chartered Accountants in 1967 and promoted to a Fellow of the Institute in 1976.
As many of you know, Robert is a quiet and conscientious man who puts his heart and soul into his work at Eagar&Co. Robert has gained much experience and knowledge of local businesses and in particular RSLs and Sporting Clubs in the Northern Beaches area. He has been participating in audits of these clubs since he started at the firm. FWA Eagar&Co began auditing these clubs in the early 1920s under Frank William Austin Eagar.
Robert will now be able to spend more quality time with his family, play more golf, as well as focussing on some other interests. Robert's retirement will be a great loss to the firm; however he will remain as a consultant.
Robert will officially retire from FWA Eagar&Co on the 22 February 2007 (details below). We will hold a farewell function that night, which will be combined with FWA Eagar&Co's first seminar for the year on Retirement and Estate Planning, and Superannuation Changes.
